# Sesson Shukei

The University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts, is an institution that, true to its unique orientation and resources, has brought us many memorable and thought-provoking exhibitions over the years. The museum’s current exhibition, “Sesson: A Singular Painter” running through late May, is another that will surely be remembered as a timely and richly rewarding effort to shed new light on a great artist that, in the eyes of its planners, has yet to win his rightful place in art history — at least in Japan. A painter of Japan’s war-torn but artistically fertile 16th century, Sesson Shukei has historically been overshadowed by figures like Sesshu, who died just around the time of Sesson’s birth in the first decade of the 1500s.

Interestingly, however, while Sesshu became the representative artist of the era in Japanese textbooks, it was Sesson who became the favorite of many foreign collectors, and some of his greatest works are now in the collections of museums like New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Minneapolis Institute of Art, both of which have lent important works for this exhibition.
